Maxwell-Gumbleton papers: Appointment as Hon Canon

George Forrest by Divine Permission Bishop of Bristol To our well beloved in Christ Maxwell Homfray Smith Clerk [?] Vicar of the Parish of Chippenham with Tytherton Lucas and Hardenhuish in the County of Wilts within our Diocese Health[?] Space[?] and Benediction. Whereas in and by the 23rd Section of an Act passed in the 3rd and 4th years of the reign of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria cap 113 It was enacted that Prebends Dignities or Offices And that the holders of such Canonries should be styled Honorary Canons and should be entitled to Stalls and take rank in the Cathedral Church next after the Canons. We therefore in pursuance of the above recited Act Do hereby freely and out of mere goodwill give and confer upon you the office or place of an Honorary Canon in our Cathedral Church of Bristol and duly and canonically Collate and Institute you in and to the same and invest you with all and singular the rights members privileges and appurtenances thereunto belonging (you having first before us made such subscriptions and taken such oaths as are in this case by law or custom required to be subscribed and taken) And we do by these presents assign and appoint unto you a Stall in the Choir of our said Cathedral Church (saving always to us and our successors our Episcopal rights and the dignity and honour of our said Cathedral Church) The testimony whereof we have caused our Episcopal Seal to be hereunto affixed Dated this twenty ninth day of December in the year of our Lord One thousand nine hundred and ten and of our Translation the fourteenth.
