James Joseph Gumbleton
James Joseph Gumbleton, 87, of Southern Pines, passed away on Monday, Sept. 30, 2019, at Penick Village.

James retired in 1962 as an engineer for General Motors, where he worked for 40 years. The last class that he taught was at West End Elementary.

He was an avid Notre Dame fan, from which he graduated from in 1954. He enjoyed watching and going to their football games. After graduating from Notre Dame, he went on to Wayne State University in Detroit, to earn his master’s degree in engineering. James was a very loving husband and father.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathleen O’Connor Gumbleton, of Southern Pines, and their children, Richard James Gumbleton, of Bloomfield, Mich.; Mark Anthony Gumbleton and wife, Angela, of Riverside, Calif.; Laura Flanigan and husband, James, of Royal Oak, Mich.; and Gary Gumbleton and wife, Mica, of Riverside, Calif. He is also survived by his brother, Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, of Detroit, and his sister, Sister Irene Therese Gumbleton, of Clinton Township, Mich.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in Southern Pines, with Bishop Thomas Gumbleton and Father Andrew McNair officiating.
