| Clara Jane GUMBLETON was one of the children of John GUMBLETON and his wife Eliza (nee DUNFORD). She was born in 1855 in the St George in the East registration district, Middlesex, England. Around that time, her parents were living at 7, Clarence-place, Hackney-road, Tower Hamlets.
In the 1861 census, when she was 5, the family were living in SHoreditch and her father was a Rush mat maker. By 1871, aged 15, she had left school and was in service, but was still living with her parents, who were at 59, Cherry Garden Street, Bermondsey, Surrey. In 1981, still living at home (now at 1 Dilston Grove, Rotherhithe) she was described as a machinist. Later that year (in October) she was married at All Saints Church, Walworth, to John Arthur Hall, a carman. The 1891 census shows them living in Dilston Grove, Rotherhithe, presumably in their old family home, with their 4 children and Eliza Gumbleton, Clara's mother. By this date, Clara's father had been admitted to the St Olave Union Workhouse. | ||
