Early records of Gumbletons and Gomeldons

Norden's map The name Gumbleton or Gomeldon originated in the place named Gomeldon, near Salisbury, in the county of Wiltshire. The ''Concise Oxford Dictionary of Place Names'' gives the earliest recorded names of the place as ''Gumelesdon'', in 1230 (recorded in the "Feet of Fines"), ''Gomeledon'', in both 1275 (in the Rotali Hundredorum, and 1311 (in an Inquisition Post Mortem). It states that the name means "Gumela's Hill".

The county map of Wiltshire by John Speed, dating from about 1646, shows the village name as GUMLETON. The city of Salisbury is about 7 miles to the southwest, and Stonehenge is a similar distance to the northwest.

J. Peter Swann, a tireless researcher into the Gumbleton family, wrote to Keith Norris, of the Bourne Valley Hist. Rec. & Cons. Society, who said that the names of Gomeldon, and the nearby village of Idmiston, in Wiltshire, are thought to have derived from the names of two leaders of the Saxon colonists. Idmiston being Idmaer's tun or farm and Gomeldon being the dun or hill of the Gumela, the people of Guma.

I have collected various early (pre 1600) references to the name.
