| Henry Gumbleton was a son of Solomon GUMBLETON and his wife Maria (nee OSMON). He was born in 1871 in the Brentford registration district, Middlesex, England, and baptised 13 Aug 1871 in Hanwell, Middlesex. Earlier that year, the family were living at Gardener's Cottage, The Spring, Hanwell, Middlesex, and Solomon was recorded as a gardener.
By 1881, the family were living at Herrott Villas, Hanwell, and Henry's father was described as a Gardener & Florist. Henry (recorded as Harry in the census) was a scholar. In the 1891 census, Henry was still living with his parents, now at 17 Alfred Terrace, Rosebank Rd, Hanwell, Middlesex. Henry was now 19 and was working as a clerk. By 1901 Henry, now aged 29, was working as the Hotel Cashier at Bedford Hotel, King Street, St Paul, Covt Garden, Middlesex. At some point Henry must have started using the name "Harry GRANT" because, in 1919, he was married as "Harry Gumbleton alias Grant".The marriage took place at St. James's Chapel, Goff's Oak, Cheshunt; his spouse was Florence Stella BUSH, a spinster. Henry's occupation, on the marriage certificate, was given as "soldier", but no further information about his military career has been found. Stella BUSH had two children before she was married: Rebe Mary BUSH (b.1914) and Marie BUSH (b.1918), but it is not known if Henry Gumbleton was the father. The 1928 electoral rolls show Harry and Stella "GRANT" living at 4 Starr's cottages, Goffs Oak, Cheshunt: Henry's brother George was living with them. Harry GRANT died in 1944 in Goffs Oak, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. | ||||||||||||||||||
