Description
Abertillery is a town in South Wales, now in the county of Blaenau Gwent, but historically in Monmouthshire. It is about 20 miles inland from Newport.In the late 19th and early 20th century, Abertillery grew from a rural community to an important centre of coal mining. In the 1880s, the Powell's Tillery Steam Coal Company sank a pit, known as the Gray Pit, and other pits followed. A history of the town is given at the Abertillery Online website.
