Inquisitions Post Mortem
An Inquisition post mortem (abbreviated to IPM) and also known as an Escheat is a part of the English feudal system, and was convened to record the death, estate and heir of any of the king's tenants-in-chief. The inquisitions were conducted by the royal escheator (or a deputy) in each county where the deceased held land. The earliest IPMS date from 1236, in the reign of King Henry III.
The system fell into disuse and was formally abolished by the Tenures Abolition Act 1660, which ended the feudal system.
