| Samuel Gumbleton was born about 1782. He later gave his place of birth as Bishopstone, Wiltshire, but no evidence of this has been found. He certainly married Elizabeth Golding in Bishopstone, on 31 May 1810, but there are no records of Gumbletons in that village prior to that event.
By 1812, Samuel and Elizabeth were living in Long Crichel, Dorset, where they baptised six of their seven children. In 1823, Elizabeth died and was buried on 21 Oct 1823 at Long Crichel. This must have left Samuel with Seven children aged from a few months old to 13 years old. A year later, he married Jane Bennett at Long Crichel. Samuel and Jane had two more children, but she died in 1836 and was buried on 17 Sep 1836 at Long Crichel. In the 1841 census, Samuel, an agricultural labourer, is shown living at Crichel Street, Long Critchel, with five of his children. The eldest, Ann, was now aged about 29, and must have had to take responsibility for the younger siblings (the youngest was aged 1). By 1851, most of the children had left home and Samuel was living with his unmarried son, William. Samuel was receiving parish relief which may mean that he was ill. Certainly, he died two years later and was buried on 1 Apr 1853 at Long Crichel. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
