| Fanny Gumbleton was a daughter of Robert Gumbleton and Eliza nee King. Robert was a hurdle-maker in the village of Eastdean near Chichester, Sussex. Hurdles were made from wattle, usually of hazel or willow, by placing upright sticks in holes in a log and weaving split branches between them. Historically they were used to pen livestock such as sheep.
Fanny has not been found in the 1861 census, but in 1871, she was working as a cook and general servant at Fair Field House, Eastdean, Sussex. In 1874, she married Charles Austin, at Eastdean. Fanny Austin died aged 37 in 1880, in the Westhampnett Registration District. (Vol. 2b p237). In the 1881 census, Charles Austin, a widower, was a blacksmith in Eastdean. | ||
