Albert Edward Gumbleton was a son of Alfred Gumbleton (a seaman) and his wife Alice Maria, nee Wells. He was born on 5 Mar 1901and baptised on 28 Aug 1903 at Holy Trinity Church, Blackheath, London.
His father died, at sea, when Albert Edward was about 2 years old. In 1911, he is probably the 'Herbert' Gumbleton (age 10) living in the Royal Merchant Seamen's Orphanage, Hermon Hill, Wanstead, Essex. Perhaps Albert was shortened to 'Bert' and was wrongly recorded as Herbert. He became a merchant seaman himself and was awarded the Mercantine Marine medals in World War I. He received his 2nd mate certificate in 1921, 1st mate in 1923 and was given a master's certificate in 1925. He married Annie MacDonald, possibly in Scotland. In later life, they lived in Christow, Exeter, Devon. He died, in Devon, in 1971. His will gives his address as "Appledram", Christow, Exeter, Devon. His widow died in Norham, Northumberland, in 2012, aged 101. Her death was recorded in the Berwick Advertiser. |
