Occupation:
Mary Gumbleton was one of the children of Robert Gumbleton of Ansty-in-Hilton, Dorset and his wife Sarah. She was baptised on 21 Oct 1717 at Hilton, Dorset.

Her father died in 1731 and her mother in about 1732. She was subsequently (in 1734) represented in a court case relating to her claim on her late father’s estate.

In 1749, under the terms of The Poor Law, she was removed from the parish of Blandford Forum and sent back to the parish of Milton Abbas, Dorset, where she had legal rights of settlement. In her examination she gave an account of her travels. She said that she was born in the Parish of Ansty and that about eight years previously, she had hired herself as a Covenant Servant to John Farr of the Parish of Fontmell Magna, for one year, at the yearly wages of fifty shillings. She served the full year and received her years wages. Afterwards she went and hired herself to John Brag of the Parish of Milton Abbas (a carpenter) for one year for the wages of three pounds a year and again served the full year and received her wages accordingly. Since that time she had done nothing that would have given her a right to settlement in any other parish.
