| John Gumbleton was a son of James Lambert Gumbleton and his wife Mary Ann, nee Bayly. He was baptised on 25 Jan 1822 in Southwark, Surrey.
In the 1841 census, he is shown working as a shopman for a corn dealer in Wapping Street, Tower Hamlets, London. In 1842 he married Eliza Dunford at St George’s, Camberwell. They went on to have eleven children. The 1851 census shows them living at 29 Holywell Lane, Shoreditch, where John was now a corn dealer in his own right. However, in 1852, the Electoral Roll shows John having a house at 14 New North Place, Tower Hamlets and the 1854 Electoral Rolls list him at 7, Clarence-place, Hackney-road, Tower Hamlets. At this address, he is listed in London Post Office Directories of 1856-1859 as a Russia Mat Dealer. It is as a Russia Mat Maker in Shoreditch that his is listed in the 1861 census. By 1871, he had moved south of the river and was living at 59, Cherry Garden Street, Bermondsey, Surrey, as a Russia mat and bag maker. In 1881, now aged 59, he was working as a warehouseman and living at 1 Dilston Grove, Rotherhithe. Eliza was still living there in 1891, but John had been admitted to the St Olave Union Workhouse.
