John GUMBLETON

In the 1851 census the family (minus John Gumbleton senior who was probably working away from home) were living in West Grimstead and John (junior) was a scholar. By 1861 they had moved to Clarendon Road in the neighbouring village of Alderbury and John, now 16, was a labourer in the woods.

In 1868 he married Charlotte Jane Cape. By this stage, John had moved to 7 St George's Rd, Notting Hill, London and was working as an engine driver. His wife-to-be was living at the same address. Three years later, in the 1871 census, John and Jane were living at 9, Heath Cottages, High St, Hanwell, and he was a "stoker at the asylum". This was presumably the Hanwell Insane Asylum, which was the first purpose-built public asylum in England and Wales (opened in 1831).

They were living at the same address in 1881, but John was now in his former occupation of an engine driver.

From 1891to 1895 John was living at 3 Clifden Villas, Boston Thorpe, Hanwell. From 1896 to 1901 his address is given as 8 Boston Thorpe Road, Hanwell. In 1900, his daughter Annie Elizabeth was married and his occupation is noted as 'engineer'. In 1904 another daughter, Florence was married and he was described as 'engine driver'.

In the 1911 census, John and Charlotte were living at 66 Studley Grange Rd, Hanwell, Middlesex ( he a pensioner engineman).

John died in 1923 in the Bromley Registration District, Kent.
