| Henry Charles Gumbleton was born in 1847 and baptised on 6 Jun at Long Crichel, Dorset. Long Crichel is a small village, a few miles from Wimborne. His parents were George Gumbleton (a farm labourer and thatcher) and Uri, nee Garrett. In the 1851 census, aged 4, he was living with his parents and their family in Long Crichel.
By 1861, now aged 14, he had left school and was a ploughboy, still living with his family. In 1871, he is still shown as living with his family and the address is given as "Farm Middle, Long Crichel". By then, Henry was described as a groom. In 1873 he married Anna Maria Hayter in the Tisbury district (exact parish not known). By the time of the 1881 census, they had four children and were living in Witchampton Common, Dorset, where he was a general labourer. He is listed in the electoral rolls for Moor Critchel, Dorset, from 1888, and the 1891 census shows him and his family living in "The Buildings", Moor Crichel, where he is a wood labourer, in 1891.
