|Walter Edgar Gumbleton was born in 1875, in the Alderbury Registration District and was baptised on 25
July 1875 at Alderbury Church. He was the eldest son of George Gumbleton and Elizabeth nee Spicknell.
In the 1881 censuses, he was living with his parents at the Three Crowns, Alderbury, and in 1891, aged 15, he was living with his grandparents in West Grimstead.|
In 1896, he joined the Metropolitan Police and was initially in the Whitechapel Division. However, in 1899, he was posted to Portsmouth Dockyard. In 1901, he was living in the police quarters in Alverstoke, Portsmouth, Hampshire. He was married to Ellen Triggs, in Alverstoke, Hampshire, in 1903 but, in May of that year, he was transferred to the Wandsworth division of the Met. Police. At the birth of his first child, in 1904, he was living at 61, Thorne St, Barnes, Surrey.
Walter's first wife died in 1915 and, in 1916, he married Mary Triggs in Richmond, Surrey.
In 1921, he was pensioned out of the Police.
