1939 Index

The 1939 register was a census of the UK population, taken on 29 September 1939, at the outbreak of World War II. It was used for the issuing of wartime identity cards, whose use was ended in 1952. Information from the register was also used in the founding of the National Health service. The online genealogy companies ancestry.co.uk and findmypast.co.uk have digitised the records and made them available online.

The online Register only allows access to information about individuals born more than 100 years ago, or who are known to have died. Where I have listed 'Unidentified people (closed records)', these represent people who may still be living and whose records remain closed to the public.
