Roger Gomeldon was a son of William Gomeldon [F0001] and his first wife Ann. He was baptised 1572 at Salisbury St Edmund, Wiltshire.
In the later grant of arms to two of his sons, he was described as a Merchant Adventurer. This presumably means that he was a member of the Company of Merchant Adventurers, which dated from the early 15th century and consisted of London's leading overseas merchants in a guild-like organisation. Its members' main business was originally the export of cloth, but may have been more diverse by this era. Admission was by patrimony (being the son of a merchant who was free of the company at the time of the son's birth), service (apprenticeship to a member), redemption (purchase) or 'free gift'. By the time of the accession of James I in 1603, there were at least 200 members. He was also described (in his own will) as a "Citizen and Skinner of London". The Worshipful Company of Skinners is one of the twelve great Livery Companies of the City of London. It was originally an association of those engaged in the trade of skins and furs. Membership of the Skinners' Company would also have conferred the rights of Citizenship (ie "freedom of the City"). He married Cicily Joyce WILCOX (or WILCOTTS) on 4 Apr 1605 at Banbury, Oxfordshire. They had at least five children Roger Gomeldon was buried 20 Oct 1618 at the church of St Andrew Undershaft, in the City of London. His will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury and mentions his wife Cicely and five children. |
