Lydia Gumbleton, a daughter of Josiah William Dornford GUMBLETON and Lydia (nee Revell), was born in about 1835.

In 1851, aged 14, she was an apprentice with her grandmother in Heath Street, Hampstead.

On 10 Mar 1863 she married James Butler COLMER, a draper, at Christ Church, Hampstead. He was the son of William Colmer and Jane (nee Butler) of Ford Alvington, Devon. He was previously married (29 Jan 1853) to Fanny Charlotte Jarvis and they had 6 children: Fanny Elizabeth; Marion,; Anne Butler, Ellen, Jane, and Florence. He had been a neighbour of the Gumbletons in Heath Street, Hampstead. James Colmer and Lydia (nee Gumbleton) had a further 5 children:

  • James Henry COLMER born 26 Dec 1865. He became managing director of the department store after his father died. He died in Bath 8 December 1939
  • Clara COLMER b.1867 d. 1932. m (1894) Stanley Smith [b. 1870 d. 1932] son Reginald Stanley, dau. Doreen Lucy.
  • Jessica Lydia Butler COLMER b.1866 who died young on 24 June 1913 Missionary Sydney Aus.
  • Lillian Ada COLMER b.1869 d. 1930. m (1900) William Vaughan Jenkins [b. 1869 d. 1920]. Children: Gladys V Jenkins 1903; Frederick V Colmer Jenkins 1906
  • Robert Boning Butler COLMER b. 1870 Bath. Died as an infant 1871
  • Gertrude COLMER born 1872 Bath died 24 September 1948 married 2 May 1900 Henry James Rickards.
Lydia's husband, James Butler Colmer was chairman of a large department store in Bath. In 1871 she was staying with her uncle in Hammersmith. In 1881 they were in Barnstaple. In 1891 they were living in Redland Knoll, Bristol. He died in 1897 and his will gives his residence as 'Redland Knoll, Bristol'. Lydia died in 1907 in Bristol and there was a will: 'Lydia Colmer, widow, of 27 St John's Road, Clifton, Bristol, died 30 March 1907. Probate Bristol 16 May 1907 to James Henry Colmer Limited Co., Chairman and Director. Estate £1,485.'
